Wormhole Arcade

Science Fiction is a major influence on my designs, and I wanted to pay homage to the 2005 Doctor Who title sequence, where the small capsule-like space ship travels through a vortex of blue light as credits and titles fly past the camera like debris in the wormhole. I wanted to take the sci-fi arcade machine I modeled as a practice piece and give it some action. Making the wormhole was quite a bit more simplistic than I truely wanted it to be. Now-a-days I can think of a hundred reasons why this wormhole looks so bland and flat and polygonal compared to the one seen in Doctor who. But despite that it had quite a bit of creativity thrown into it.

For example, the camera is stationary the entire time this animation plays. The wormhole's texture is the component moving, rather than the camera, by constantly displacing the UV map over the duration of the animated clip. To expand upon the illusion, the wormhole was rigged to a 3 segmented armature, which allowed it to twist and wag, making bends in the cylinder, so objects may seemingly disappear into the moving chaos.

Looks kind of like a worm, don't you think?
